January 3rd. 1852 - The Church met & after prayer called Rev. Michael Cates to Chair as our Pastor was absent & proceded to business - 1st. Br. Joseph Gaut requested letters of (p.193) dismission for himself and wife Delila and his children - Viz. John J. Gaut, Charlotty Gaut, Simeon P. Gaut and it was granted. E. Cates Clk. Feby. 7th 1852 - The Church met & after divine Service proceeded to business - 1st. Rec'd Orlena Cate by letter and nothing else. E. Cate Clk. March 6th 1852 - Owing to the enclemency of the weather and the death of John Douglass the Church did not meet. E. Cates - C. Clerk. April 3rd. 1852 - The Church met and after divine Service proceeded
to business - 1st. Opened a door for the reception of members and Rec'd
Nancy Parker & Harriet Parker by letter - 2nd. Took up a charge against
Mary An Lowery for lewdness and appointed Charles Elder - Thos. Cate & Elisha
Cate to here the testimony and report forthwith and after having retired
a few minutes returned with the following report - We, your Committee
after hereing the evidence against said Sister we do believe it to be
to the Glory of God and his cause to exclude her from the fellowship
of the Church for disorderly and immoral conduct or lewdness, all of
which is respectfully submitted - Elisha Cate, Charles Elder, Thomas
Cate. And on motion the Church rec'd the report and the Commitee was
discharged - And after a few minutes deliberation the Church excludes
her from her fellowship for the above offence. Elisha Cate - Church Clk. April 3rd. 1852 - The Chuch met & the pastor failed to attend and after prayers ajourned till tomorrow and the Pastor came & Rec'd Martha Mount, Alies Lyles, David Lyles, Ephraim Liles, Mary Jane Sellers by Baptism - E. Cates - Clk. June 5th. 1852 - The Church met & after divine Service proceeded to business - 1st. - Our pastor being absent chose Rev. J. Quarrel Moderator - 2nd. - Parnel Bailes and his wife Martha reqested letters of dismission and granted - 3rd. - The treasury's report for 1851 was received - 4th. - the Church appointed J. W. Elder the former treasury, treasury for this year - 5th. - The Church appointed Thomas Bryan & Charles Elder a Committee to employ some persons to keep the Church house clean an keep fire in the stove in the cold Season of the year and report to our next meeting - E. Cate - Clk. July 1st 1852 - The Church met & after Worship proceded to business - 1st. As our pastor was absent chose Br. Charles Elder - Moderator - 2nd. The reference of last meeting called for Br. Bryan being absent (p.195) Br. Elder one of the Committee appointed reported that they had employed Br. Joseph Cate to attend to the Church an keep things in order for any one year for the sum of $2.50 - 3rd. The Church appointed her next Camp meeting to commence on fryday night before the 3rd. Saturday in Sept. next and invite Minett, Manning, Morris, Burnett & Quarrel to assist in carrying out sd. meeting - E. Cates - Clk. August 7th 1852 - The Church met and after divine Service by Rev. W. Ellis on account of the absence of our pastor chose Br. Ellis Moderator - Ann Henry & Susan Lyle Dismissed by letter - E. Cates - Clerk. Sept. 17 1852 - The Camp meeting at Dumplin Creek commenced on Saturday the Church was called to order by our pastor & appointed Brs. C. Elder, Thos. Cate & Thomas G. Douglass as our delligates to the Tennessee Association to be held at Beaver ridge Chappel - Knox County - Tennessee - 2nd. Appointed Michael Cates & J. W. Miller deligates to the General Association to be held at Beaver dam Knox County, Tenn. And continued till Sunday week & Rec'd by Baptism -1- A. J. Newman -2- H. P. Newman -3- Lucinda Newman -4- Lemuel Carmichael -5- Thomas Ledwell -6- Mary French -7- Martha Rollens -8- Em E. French -9- Katherine Anderson -10- Lucy E. Bryan -11- Elizabeth Newman -13- Amanda Manard -14- Kindrick Baly -15- Samuel Carmichael -16- Pleasant Manard -17- Lea Miller -18- Silas A. Manard -19- James C. Baley was appointed for Baptism on Sunday following day - Rec'd John C. Baley & Hannah N. Baly, Gemima Scarlett, Elijah J. Taylor -4- Evin Hancock by Baptism - E. Cate - Clk. Dec. 4th 1852 - The Church met and after divine Service opened a door for the reception of members and Margaret A. Cate was rec'd for baptism - E. Cate - Clk. Jany 1853 - The Church met & no business & Dismissed. E. Cate - Clk. Feby and March 1853 - Owing to high water and extream cold weather our pastor did not attend - conciquently no church Session - E. Cates - Clk. April 2nd. 1853 - The Church met & after divine Service proceeded to open the door for the reception of members and Rec'd Elizabeth Miller by letter - no other business and dismissed - E. Cates - Clk. May 1853 - The Church met but no business done in Church way. - E. Cate June 4th 1853 - The Church met and after divine Service proceeded to business - 1st. rec'd Mary Newman by letter and Margaret A. Cate by baptism - The treasury asks to have till next meeting to make his report. E. Cate - C. Clk. (p.197) July 2nd 1853 - The Church met - our pastor not present and after prayer proceeded to business - 1st Chose Rev. M. Cate Moderator -2- The treasury made his Annual report which was rec'd - 3rd. appointed D.L. Jones treasury - 4th - Employed Joseph Cate to attend the Church house and furnish fuel for the stove for the ensuing year for which he is to receive $2.50 at the end of the year - E. Cate - Church Clk. August 6th 1853 - The Church met and after divine Service by Rev. J. Quarrel proceeded to business - 1st. rec'd by letter Celia Miller & Susannah Carmichael. E. Cate - Clk. Sept. 3rd 1853 - The Church met and after prayer proceeded to business - 1st. Our pastor being absent Rev. M. Cate Moderator -2- appointed R. R. Bryan, M. Cate & Daniel L. Jones deligates to the District Association to be at the mouth of Richland commencing on fryday before the 1st. Satuday of Oct. next, Grainger County, Tenn. Bro. H. V. Hoozer requested letters of dismission for himself and his wife Rebecca and his son Pleasant & granted -3rd. Hetty Alderson - alias Smith also requested a letter of dismission and it was granted - E. Cate - C. Clk. (p.198) Oct. 7th 1853 - The Camp meeting commenced according to appointment fryday night - On Saturday the Church was called to order by our pastor - no business only assumed the payment of twelve dollars which our Pastor had signed to aid in the distribution of baptist works And the meeting continued till the Thursday night and during the meeting Rec'd by baptism Prudence Curry -1- Elizabeth Curry -2- Harriet C. Curry -3- Julyan Russell -4- Thomas Lisle -5- Barsheba An Lile -6- Gracy Alderson -7- James Perry, Jesse P. Overbay, Martha J. Carmichael, Malceny Willhite and rec'd by baptism - E. Cate - Church Clk. Nov. 5th 1853 - The Church met and after divine Service proceeded and opened the door for the reception of new members - none offered and no other business done - was dismissed on Sabbath Rec'd Jesse P. Pollard, Nancy Braden Sr. and Malceny Willhite by baptism - E. Cate - Clk. Dec. 1853 - Monthly meeting passed off without any business being transacted. E. Cate - Clk. Jany. 1854 - The Church met - no pastor but after prayer the Church proceded to business - 1st. On application the Chruch granted Mary & Eliz. Pearse letters of dismission. Feby. 1854 - The Church met - no business - E. Cate - Clk. March 1854 - The Church met - no business - was dismissed - E. Cate - Clk. (p.199) April 1854 - The Church met - Service by Br. Kean - no business - was dismissed. E. Cate - Clk. May 6th 1854 - The Church met & after divine Service proceded to business 1st. Mary Underwood requested a letter of dismission & granted and on Sabbath Rec'd M. J. Carmichael by Baptism. Elisha Cate - Clk. June 3rd. 1854 - The Church met & after divine Service no business - was dismissed. E. Cate - Clk. July 1st 1854 - The Church met and after divine Service proceded to business 1st. Whereas C. C. Tipton has been accused of carrying Carnel weapons. This is to certify that a number of us were present at Henry's X Roads at the meeting when R. M. Whaley & C. C. Tipton met to debate cerain points in Theology also that C. C. Tipton preached at this place on the two following days and none of us saw any weapons of defence of any kind - only the books which he used nor did we here Tipton at that or any other time Speak of using Carnel weapons to defend himself in any way. Further we have been acquainted with Tipton for the last twelve or fifteen years a portion of which time he attended us as pastor and the reports about him carryin such weapons we believe to be a malicious fabrication in order to inger him as a Minister if the Gospel by those who are not able to meet him in debate -2nd - took up a charge against Lucretia Jones for having an illegitimate Child - being satisfied of the truth of the charge excludes her from our fellowship - took a charge against Martha Rollens for having an illigitimate child and being satisfied of the truth of the charge excluded her from the fellowship of the Church - (p.200) - Took up a charge against Jane Sellers for not living with her husband & lewdness and appointed Sister Jane French & Hannah N. Baley to cite to attend est Church meeting -5th- Appointed fryday night before the 4th Saturday in Sept. next for Camp meeting provided Rev. J. S. Caram can attend with us at that time and it is made the Clerks duty to ascertain as soon as possible and on condition that he can come we have agreed to call on the following Minister's Viz. J. Manning, N. Cate, G. Minett, J. Quarrel, Cowan, D. P. Morris & Kean to labour with us - E. Cate - Clk. August 5th 1854 - The Church met and after divine Service proceded to business - 1st. after opening a door for the reception of members took up the reference of last meeting against Sister Jane Sellers and she being absent and no person would come forward & give evidence - the Church appoints Bro. Charles Elder, Wm. French & D. L. Jones to talk to her & collect testimony against her & have it ready for trial at next meeting - E. Cate Sept. 2nd 1854 - The Church met & after divine Service proceded to business - 1st. took up the refference of last meeting against Jane Sellers & rec'd the report of the Committee & the Committee discharged and it appears from the report of sd. Committe (p.201) that she is a person of adulterous character, therefore the Church proceeds to exclude her from the fellowship of the Church - 2nd. Dismissed by letter Cinthy White, Wm. Thomas and his wife Elizabeth, Katherine Hickman & Mary White - 3rd. Rec'd the report of the treasury -4- Appointed Jesse Douglass treasury for the ensuing year -5- Appointed Michael Coons, Thos. G. Douglass & Thos. Bryan as our Deligates to the Tenn. Association to be held at Paw Paw Hollow Church commencing on fryday before the 1st. Saturday in Oct. next -6- Appointed Thos. Cate, Henry Miller & Michael Cate as our deligates to the General Association. The Church took up a charge against Bro. David R. Saseen for profain swaring & appointed Brethren Charles Elder, Wm. French & John Baley to labour with him and cite him to our next meeting. E. Cate - Clk. (p.202) Sept. 1854 - The Camp meeting commenced according to appointment and continued from fryday night till Sunday night week and during the meeting Rec'd by letter Mary Underwood, Mary Jane Conner, Malvina Chambers by baptism -1st- Martha McNeese -2- C. Manard -3- Jane Henry -4- John P. T. Mount -5- Humphrey Mount -6- Robert Bailes -7- Henry C. Cate -8- Sarah J. Newman -9- Jefferson Cate -10- Eliz. J. Alderson, -11- Wm. Alderson & -12- George Russell and at the close the letters to the General Association & District Association and was approved - J. P. Byan returned his letter. E. Cate - Clk. Nov. 4th 1854 - The Church met and after divine Service proceded to business - 1st. Opened a door for the reception of members & rec'd Wm. Smith for baptism -2- took up the reference of Sept. Concerning Br. Saseen and the Committee failed to report, therefore the case was posponed till next meeting - 2nd. Whereas Br. Granville Kite on the 1st. Saturday of our last Camp meeting in Church Session then and there discharge the Church of being ingaged in a work which attends to the altering of the word of God, therefore Bro. Thos Cate & Charles Elder is appointed a Committee to see him & call upon him to come to our next Church meeting & sustain the charge. (p.203) Dec. 2nd 1854 - The Church met and after divine Service proceeded to business - 1st. Opened door for the reception of members and rec'd Susan Miller by letter - 2nd. took up the reference concerning Br. Sasseen and the Committee reports that they saw him and he professed to be sorry and talked of coming to Church but he failed to come - the Church waits with him till next meeting - 3rd. took up the reference concerning Kite & as he failed to come, after some investigation it is laid over till next meeting -4- Sister Lucy Smith was chosen house-keeper the ensuing year for which she is to have two dollars & fifty cents -5- Whereas it is reputed Kendrick Baley has been drinking ardent Spirits to access and appointed Charles Elder & Joseph Cate to see him & enquire into the case & report to our next meeting - E.
