Salt Allowances in 1862
During the Confederate Occupation

Jefferson County     }  Personally appeared the following named persons, citizens of said County, and made oath in due form of law that the amounts of salt set oposite [sic] their several names, is the least amount of salt necessary for present use to salt their meat, to be loaded into three waggons [sic], _____ waggons of J. B. Dyke, waggoneer(?) _____ _____ _____ _____ following:

J. B. Dyke 9 in family 1-1/3 sacks, 3 bushels each or 150 lbs.
James Hale 13 in family 2 sacks, 150 lbs each
B. B. Tally 8 in family 1 sack, 150 lbs each
Wid. E. Tally 11 in family 1-2/3 sacks, 150 lbs each
J. M. Felkner 10 in family 1 sack, 150 lbs each
Wm Felkner [blank] in family 1-1/3 sacks, 150 lbs each
Saml Felkner 2 in family 1 sack, 150 lbs each
A. M. Felkner 6 in family 1 sack, 150 lbs each
Alexander Felkner 10 in family 1 sack, 150 lbs each

11-1/3 or 34 bushels

Second waggon [sic] Joel Milton waggoner [sic] 20 bushels as follows

Joel Milton 8 in family 2/3 sack, 3 bushels each
Saml Alexander 7 in family 2/3 sack, 3 bushels each
Wid. M. Hale 6 in family 2/3 sack, 3 bushels each
Wid. M. McDaniel 6 in family 2/3 sack, 3 bushels each
Cebern Quin 6 in family 1 sack, 3 bushels each
Thomas Shepherd 3 in family 1/3 sack, 3 bushels each
Wm McClister 10 in family 11 sack, 3 bushels each
Wm T. Smith 4 in family 2/3 sack, 3 bushels each
Henry Smith 5 in family 1/3 sack, 3 bushels each
Geo. W. Courtney 7 in family 2/3 sack, 3 bushels each
    6-2/3 sacks or 20 bushels

Third waggon [sic] David McClister waggoner [sic] [blank] bushels as follows

David McClister 6 in family 1 sack, 150 lbs each
James A. Smith 6 in family 2/3 sack, 150 lbs each

I certify that the above named persons are heads of families, that I am personally acquainted with all of them and that all reside in Jefferson County Tennessee and I believe the amount of salt set down to each will be a scanty amount for present use, and that all have been qualified to said amounts except three or four, and they were represented.  Nov. 19th 1862

On the receipt of the money sufficient to pay for 140 bushels of salt which is the above amounts you will deliver to David McClister the bearer of these lines, the said salt to be loaded in three waggons [sic] for the benefit of the above named citizens, Nov 19th 1862
